Most travelers planning a Merapi jeep tour have the same stops in mind: the lava fields, Museum Sisa Hartaku, Bunker Kaliadem.

Those are the well-known ones, and for good reason. But there’s a stop that appears on the longer route options and consistently surprises people who didn’t know what to expect — a 40-meter waterfall tucked into the forested slopes of Merapi’s northern flank, usually quiet, almost always beautiful, and rarely mentioned in the standard tour descriptions.

That’s Kedung Kayang.

What Is Kedung Kayang Waterfall?

Kedung Kayang is a waterfall on the slopes of Mount Merapi, sitting at around 1,200 meters above sea level on the border between Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces, roughly between Yogyakarta and Magelang. The water drops about 40 meters into a pool below, framed by dense forest and volcanic cliff faces on either side.

What makes it unusual is the viewpoint. From the main platform above the falls, the framing lines up Kedung Kayang in the foreground with Mount Merapi rising directly behind it — an active volcano backdrop behind a waterfall, which is not something most destinations can offer.

On a clear morning the shot is genuinely extraordinary, and photographers who stumble onto it tend to linger longer than planned.

The surrounding area is lush and cool, a sharp contrast to the exposed volcanic terrain most of the jeep tour covers. After spending the morning on grey lava fields and ash-covered slopes, arriving at something this green tends to feel like a different world.

How Do You Get There?

Kedung Kayang isn’t a standalone destination for most visitors — it works best as part of a longer Merapi jeep tour or as an add-on combined with other stops in the area. The waterfall sits on Merapi’s northwestern slopes, and the access road runs through the Sawangan area of Magelang regency.

From the main Kaliurang basecamp area where most Merapi jeep tours depart, the drive takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and road conditions. That’s why it tends to appear only on the longer route packages rather than the short or medium options.

From the parking area, there’s a short walk to the upper viewpoint. Most people stop here for photographs and the panoramic view of the waterfall and Merapi behind it.

If you want to go down to the base of the falls, there’s a trail that takes around 20 minutes to descend — it’s uneven in places, so proper footwear matters. The base of the falls is a different experience entirely: the sound of the water, the spray, the close-up view of the cliff face.

What to Expect on the Day

Kedung Kayang is not a heavily developed tourist site. There’s a small entrance fee (a few thousand rupiah), a basic parking area, and local vendors near the access path.

It hasn’t been built up with the kind of infrastructure that makes some Indonesian waterfalls feel more like theme parks than nature spots, which is either a feature or a limitation depending on what you’re after.

The best time to visit is the dry season (May to October), when the trails are drier and the visibility of Merapi behind the falls is more reliable.

In wet season the waterfall volume is higher and more dramatic, but the mountain often disappears into cloud and the descent to the base can get slippery.

Go in the morning if you can. The light falls better on the waterfall from the eastern viewpoint in the early hours, and the air is noticeably cooler before midday at this elevation.

Is It Worth Adding to Your Merapi Tour?

If you’re already committed to a longer Merapi day, yes. Kedung Kayang adds something the standard lava tour doesn’t have: a moment of genuine natural calm after the intensity of the volcanic landscape and eruption sites. The contrast alone makes it worth including.

If you’re doing a shorter tour and combining Merapi with Prambanan or Borobudur in the same day, it probably doesn’t fit the timing without making everything feel rushed. In that case, stick to the core lava tour stops and save Kedung Kayang for a standalone half-day or a future trip.

Wahyu Travel Indonesia’s Merapi Off-Road Adventure & Kedung Kayang Waterfall Viewpoint tour is built around exactly this combination — jeep lava fields in the morning, waterfall in the late morning, back in Yogyakarta by early afternoon.
