Most travelers to Yogyakarta spend their time between the city’s royal landmarks, the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, and the volcanic terrain of Merapi.

That’s a solid itinerary. But 25 kilometers north of the city, at around 900 meters above sea level on Merapi’s southern slope, there’s a hill town that most of them drive through on the way to the jeep basecamp and don’t stop to explore. Kaliurang deserves more than a passing glance through a car window.

What Is Kaliurang?

Kaliurang is a mountain resort town in the Sleman regency of Yogyakarta, perched on the lower slopes of Mount Merapi.

The Dutch developed it as a highland retreat during the colonial era, drawn by the cooler temperatures and clean air that the elevation provides. That colonial history is still faintly visible in the older architecture and the general atmosphere of a place designed for unhurried rest.

Today Kaliurang is most commonly visited as the departure point for Merapi jeep tours, which means it sees a steady flow of tourists who arrive early, board a jeep, spend a few hours on the volcano, and leave without exploring the town itself. That pattern leaves a lot undiscovered.

1. Ullen Sentalu Museum: The Best Cultural Museum in Java

If there’s one reason to make Kaliurang a destination rather than a transit point, it’s the Ullen Sentalu Museum.

Opened in 1994, Ullen Sentalu is dedicated to the art, culture, and history of the Javanese royal courts, specifically the four palace lineages that emerged from the division of the Mataram Sultanate in the 18th century. The collection includes royal batik, traditional kebaya, paintings, photographs, personal correspondence from Javanese princesses, and ritual objects accumulated over centuries of court life.

What makes Ullen Sentalu unusual is the way it’s curated. The museum is built partly underground, with rooms designed to feel intimate rather than institutional.

Guided tours are mandatory and genuinely informative — your guide walks you through the political history of the Javanese courts alongside the objects, so the context actually lands. Most visitors say it’s one of the best museum experiences they’ve had in Indonesia, and the consistently high review scores back that up.

Entry is by guided tour only, departing at set times throughout the day. Tickets should be arranged in advance, especially during peak season. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Wahyu Travel Indonesia includes Ullen Sentalu as part of several Merapi combination tours, including the Merapi Jeep Tour & Ullen Sentalu Museum Visit — a natural pairing since both are in the same area and complement each other well as a full morning.

2. Kaliurang Park and the Town Itself

Just below the main road, Kaliurang Park is a forested recreational area with walking paths, picnic spots, and views across the valley.

It’s not a dramatic attraction in the way the volcano or the museum are, but it’s a pleasant place to spend an hour, particularly in the morning before the heat builds. Local vendors sell food and drinks along the paths, and the atmosphere is more like a neighborhood park than a tourist site.

The town’s main street has local warungs, coffee shops, and small restaurants serving Javanese food at local prices. If you’re doing an early Merapi jeep departure, Kaliurang is where you’ll stop for breakfast before or after the tour, and the food is consistently good and cheap.

3. Merapi Volcano Museum

A few kilometers below Kaliurang on the road from Yogyakarta, the Merapi Volcano Museum is worth a stop if you want more scientific context before or after the jeep tour.

The building itself is striking, designed like stacked pyramids, and the interior covers Merapi’s eruptive history with volcanic samples, eruption photographs, and interactive simulations recreating the 1969, 1994, and 2006 events. There’s a film screening room and a second floor dedicated to broader geological phenomena.

It’s educational rather than experiential, but the context it provides for understanding what you’re seeing on the lava tour makes it a useful addition to the day.

Planning Your Kaliurang Trip from Yogyakarta

Kaliurang is about 45 to 60 minutes from central Yogyakarta by car depending on traffic, following the Jalan Kaliurang road north through Sleman. The road is straightforward and well-marked.

Most travelers combine Kaliurang with the Merapi jeep tour in the same morning, then either return to Yogyakarta for lunch or continue to Prambanan in the afternoon.

If you want to include Ullen Sentalu, allow at least half a day for the area — the museum tour alone runs around 90 minutes.

Wahyu Travel Indonesia offers private tours from Yogyakarta covering Merapi, Ullen Sentalu, and Prambanan in combination, with hotel pickup and English-speaking driver-guides. See the Merapi, Ullen Sentalu & Prambanan Temple Tour for the full-day version.
